Finding the Leader in You

Simply put, leadership occurs when an individual takes initiative to guide others and influence them to pursue successful accomplishments.

There is no one type of leadership. In fact, there is a countless number of various types of leaders. It is up to you to decide what kind you are going to be.

Where does leadership start?

Anyone can take the role of a leader. However, speaking in the business world, leadership starts at the top.

You become the owner of your company; the boss of your staff; the leader of your tribe.

Your employees are following by the example you provide them with. Why?

An employee is joining your company, so they are going to function in similar ways to you when it comes to getting work done. If you care a lot about your business, the chances are they will also carry compassion to work for such a structured company. However, if you neglect the company and show no effort, the employees will think it’s okay for them to slack off and work halfway, too.

You are at the top of your business, which means you will want to pursue a leadership role that is going to steer your employees in a direction where your business is cared for and being driven toward success.

Finding the leader in you

Here are some ways to ensure you are setting a beneficial, influential scene for your employees:

  1. Come ready to work: The biggest thing you can do to encourage your workers to come to work happy is to actually show up to work happy yourself. You want to show your employees that working for your company is enjoyable by arriving energized and ready to be productive. Spread this positive energy.

  2. Communication, honesty, integrity: Being a great leader means you will lead by being honest and open with your team. You want to keep them in the loop with news, events, check-ins, etc. to make them feel more secure and personally involved.

  3. Cheer your teammates on: A great way to get your employees to feel motivated is to cheer them on and praise them on their hard work. Simple phrases like “good work,” “keep it up,” and others of that sort are awesome places to start when it comes to encouraging your employees, and also getting them to push each other. Think of it like a sports team in that aspect.

  4. Mistakes are key: Yes, you read that right- mistakes are a key component in leadership! Cheering your team on is always a notable thing to do, but don’t forget to give constructive criticism when your employees fall short or make mistakes. Mistakes are inevitable. Us as humans are meant to make mistakes so we can learn from them. This is where that takes place tremendously. Don’t be afraid to share your mistakes in order to help yourself learn and set an example for others. It is a great advantage when you can use your own experiences to direct yourself and others toward a better-learned route to success.

  5. Keep an open mind: Be open to learn from your employees. They have a different perspective in your company then you do, so allow yourself to be open to hearing out their experiences and their thoughts on new updates. When you can be open, you portray a notion of care for what they have to share with you. This makes you more approachable to your staff and more of a resource for them to go to.

You will notice that the more you, as a business owner, step up, the more your employees will follow suit and behave accordingly with the examples you provide.

Find the leader in you and don’t lose sight of it.
