WMBCTV: New Jersey town brings Christmas to pets in need

A community event took shape in the city of Paterson, as officials hosted a Christmas distribution for the four-legged family members of the city’s residents.

From treats to toys, the smiles on residents’ faces were evident when picking up Christmas gifts for their pets.

“They’re giving away Christmas gifts to the dogs,” said Paterson Resident Frederica Butler. “Dogs are the best. And cats too.”

This is the seventh year that the city is hosting this event. Officials say that residents are not the only community members deserving of a hand-up during the holidays.

“You got everything, you got treats, you got toys, you got dog food in one box, cat food in another box,” said John DeCando, Chief Animal Control Officer. “It’s nice waking up in the morning and finding a gift for yourself under the tree but isn’t it nice to find a gift for your pet under the tree? That’s what it’s all about. It’s about loving and caring.”

The residents of Paterson say they are feeling the care in the community.

“I feel like crying, I feel so happy inside,” said Paterson Resident Mark Williams. “It’s amazing how people care for other people, you know. And I care for my dogs. Other people here care and it’s a wonderful thing.”

While those receiving these Christmas gifts for their pets say they are feeling grateful, those hosting this event also say they’re feeling grateful.

“Each box is worth about 90 dollars each with the thanks and help of all the generous people out there,” said Officer DeCando. “Without them, we can’t do it.”

Paterson officials say they come together to host this event because furry friends are not only companions, but they are also family members.

“Dogs and cats matter, too,” said Mayor Andre Sayegh. “I know how it feels to have a pet and I know how significant that pets are to our family and so I’m sure a lot of these folks consider their pets to be family.”
