It’s already being called one of the largest wildfires New Jersey has seen in 20 years. Flames from the Jones Road Wildfire could be seen burning through parts of the area, causing smoke to billow out onto local roadways and neighborhoods. Officials say that while the fire has been partially contained as of Wednesday afternoon, crews are continuing to battle the blaze and hot spots that are expected to persist for the next several days.
“As we continue to get this under full control, the expectation is that the number of acres will grow and grow in a place that is unpopulated, that is more open wilderness,” said Commissioner Shawn Latourette, New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection.
The fire has devastated much of the area, leaving smoldering remains here that will now be a part of the landscape for what could be many months if not years.
Fire trucks and aircraft numbering in the hundreds have canvassed the area in an attempt to rein in the spread of flames and douse the fire.
“Our objective is to build a line around the entire fire. Somewhere to work off of for our firefighters to be safe, somewhere to check the fire up to stop its forward progress,” said Chief Bill Donnelly, New Jersey Forest Fire Service.
While officials say the number of acres burned is expected to grow, they also say an air quality alert does remain in effect.
“I would, first of all, encourage folks to go to DEP.NJ.GOV and you will see a link right there to the air quality recommendations for individuals,” said Commissioner Shawn Latourette, New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection.
Authorities say a New Jersey man is being charged in connection with the massive fire.
