WMBCTV: Code Blue Alert
With temperatures remaining below freezing, officials are putting out the call for those most vulnerable to come in from the cold. The city of Newark is taking steps in an attempt to keep residents warm.
Code Blue - A Cold Winter Health Warning that encourages residents to take action steps when temperatures dip below freezing. The alert prompts local officials to activate emergency measures including making shelters more accessible, opening warming centers and it also increases outreach efforts to get people inside and warm during the extremely cold temperatures.
With temperatures dipping as low as 19 degrees and more predicted snowfall, Newark has issued this Code Blue to last through tomorrow.
Because of the alert, the city of Newark housing code requires that all property owners supply heat. Along with this, area shelters are open during extended hours and they will increase their bed capacity. Recreational centers are also available for families to participate in recreational activities while they warm up.
Newark residents are urged to take precaution from illness that can come from extremely cold conditions, especially if they are immunocompromised. They are also encouraged to check on their neighbors who may have pre-existing health conditions or may not have family around to check in.
If you do see someone who is unsheltered during this time, officials say to text “Path Home” to 855-11.
