WMBCTV: Community Mourns Loss of Fallen Newark Police Detective

The City of Newark is preparing to honor fallen Police Detective Joseph Azcona, who died in the line of duty last week. His funeral will take place this Friday at 10:30 a.m. at the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart, with dignitaries from federal, state, and local agencies expected to attend.
As community members continue to mourn the loss for fallen Detective Joseph Azcona, an investigation does remain ongoing.
Azcona, 26 years old and a five-year veteran of the force, was killed during a police operation targeting illegal weapons. A 14-year-old suspect is being charged with murder, attempted murder and possession of illegal weapons, according to Essex County Prosecutor Theodore Stevens. Meanwhile, 5 other people were taken into custody and another officer injured in the incident is recovering.
Law enforcement officials say Detective Azcona's sacrifice is a reminder of the dangers our officers face every day.
