WMBCTV: Gas station renovations, 6 years after deadly crash
Safety renovations have begun at this gas station. What was once the site of a devastating crash that claimed the lives of three people in 2019 is under construction in an effort to make the station safer by making the pump stations for stopped cars less exposed to the fast highway traffic along route 23 North in Wayne.
The reconstruction project will feature safety measures such as a 5 by 8 foot kiosk for attendants to take shelter and fuel islands will be protected by U-shaped bollards. The project also features four double-sided fuel pumps instead of two as well as a smaller auto repair shop to improvise overall site management.
This effort has been long awaited by many in the aftermath of the tragic accident on February 19, 2019, when police say a drug-impaired driver lost control, went airborne, and crashed into the station—killing a gas attendant as well as a father and son duo. The driver pled guilty to three counts of first-degree aggravated manslaughter.
