WMBCTV: Paterson Police Department welcomes 19 new officers
Paterson Police Graduates marked their milestone just in time for Christmas.
The Paterson Police department welcomed a new class of police academy graduates. The graduates and their families faced this milestone during the holiday season.
“What better gift than to see your sons or daughters in Paterson police uniforms,” said Paterson Mayor Andre Sayegh. “And, like I’ve stated in the past, what you do makes you honorable because there is honor in those uniforms so today we honor you in front of your families”
Officer in Charge, Patrick Murray, explains to the new class what it means to take on the role of a police officer.
“You have chosen a calling that demands the highest level of integrity, respect and responsibility,” Murray said. “The shield that you wear today is not just a symbol of authority, it is a symbol of trust. It is a responsibility to serve and protect those who call Paterson home, with fairness, compassion and honor. Our residents deserve nothing less.”
As the city of Paterson welcomes 19 new police officers, city officials are expressing their excitement for these fresh faces.
Mayor Sayegh explains that this class is already making history for the city of paterson.
“Five members, who have familial ties already to the police department,” Sayegh said. “I also want to single out Marilyn Rosario Martinez. She is on the path to becoming the first female officer to serve on the emergency response team.”
Sayegh explains that, while policing is a demanding job, it is a noble one.
“So I want to thank you for your service in advance. I want to thank you for our sacrifice in advance. I want to thank you for taking this oath of office,” Sayegh said. “I want everyone to view you as role models. I want them to look at you and say this is what I want to be when I grow up.”
