Travelers flying out of Newark Liberty International and other airports across the US will need more than just a driver’s license to get through security. Real ID, coordinated by the federal government, was introduced in 2005 as a response to the 9/11 attacks in an effort to improve airport security. And it’s set to take full effect on May 7th.
“Real ID is designed to determine with great confidence that the traveler is exactly who they say they are,” said Thomas Carter, TSA Federal Security Director.
While officials say the deadline to get your Real ID is approaching, they also explain what that process looks like.
“To get a Real ID compliant driver’s license in New Jersey, individuals will need to visit the NJMVC website and schedule an appointment,” said Thomas Carter, TSA Federal Security Director. “They will also be required to bring certain documents. The DMV will verify the authenticity of those documents and store copies, take your photo and issue your ID with a gold star on the corner.”
While some travelers already have their Real ID, others say they are planning to book their appointments at the DMV.
“I don’t see a problem with it,” said traveler, Aidan Borges. “If they want to put a star on my ID tag, then yea sure.”
Officials explain what could happen for passengers that don’t have their Real ID by the May 7th deadline.
“They could be facing potentially significant delays and potentially even be denied entry into the sterile area whereby missing their flight,” said Thomas Carter, TSA Federal Security Director.
Travelers are expressing their concerns for those potential delays.
“I mean I appreciate anything that enhances safety, but I’m concerned if it’ll have delays with traveling,” said traveler, Julianna Bendix.
“I don’t want to get delayed,” said traveler, Aidan Borges. “You already have to deal with enough at the airport.”
