Across North Jersey, cleanup continues after a storm that dumped close to a foot of snow in many communities. As residents shovel and fire up their snow blowers, concerns are shifting from snow removal to what’s left behind - lingering ice, slick surfaces and now the challenge of finding enough salt to make icy walkways safe.
“I was hoping it wasn’t ice but it’s going to freeze. It’s definitely going to freeze,” said Joe Siano, Resident, Bergen County. “I don't think you can get salt anywhere. Everybody is out of salt. All the little hardware stores - home depot, lowes - nobody has salt.”
State and local officials have warned that salt supplies are tight, with municipalities prioritizing main roads and intersections. Residents say that’s left them looking for alternatives - or relying on leftovers.
“One time I ordered from Amazon last year and one or two bags this year, but I need salt myself,” said Joe Siano, Resident, Bergen County. “I wish we’d get no more snow.”
Experts say homeowners can help by using salt sparingly and focusing on high-traffic areas like steps and walkways. As temperatures fluctuate, residents are being urged to watch for refreezing - especially overnight - even as cleanup stretches into the days ahead.
