Police say a late-night patrol turned into a weapons and drug bust in Fair Lawn. The officer patrolling at the time noticed two men rummaging through a parked vehicle outside Advance Auto Parts on River Road at around 1:45 in the morning earlier this month.
“He pulled up behind the vehicle to investigate,” said Sergeant Eric Eleshewich, Fair Lawn Police Department. “The two occupants exited the vehicle immediately when the officer pulled up. The officer began speaking with them about what they were doing and their stories didn’t pan out.”
Officials say the officer searched the vehicle and that the search revealed a loaded 9mm handgun, a high-capacity magazine with hollow-point bullets, two baggies of crack cocaine, six crack pipes and a set of nunchucks.
“The firearm itself was not an illegal firearm, however the individual was not permitted to carry it so that then became an illegal firearm,” said Sergeant Eleshewich. “Also, in New Jersey, you’re not allowed to have a magazine over 10 rounds. This was a magazine that was over 10 rounds as well as possessing hollow point bullets which you’re not allowed to do.”
Police arrested the individuals and the two are currently facing a number of charges including unlawful possession of a handgun, possession of hollow point bullets, possession of a high capacity magazine and possession of a controlled dangerous substance.
“It’s happening more and more. We’re in proximity to NYC, Newark, Paterson - these are higher crime areas and we are seeing more and more handguns unfortunately on people,” said Sergeant Eleshewich. “I want the public to know that our officers are out there when you’re sleeping at night like this at 1:45 in the morning, we’re out there looking to keep you guys safe.”
Police say the handgun has been sent for testing to see if it can be matched with any other crimes. Meanwhile, the investigation remains ongoing.
